Vancouver Aquarium
The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, Canada's Pacific National Aquarium, educates more than 850,000 visitors each year about aquatic life. The Vancouver Aquarium is a self-supporting, non-profit organization dedicated to aquatic conservation, education and research.
The Vancouver Aquarium's current butterfly program consists of an intensive seasonal display in the Graham Amazon Gallery. This gallery invites visitors to discover both aquatic and terrestrial Amazon rainforest residents. Each summer, thousands of tropical butterflies from a sustainable cooperative in Costa Rica are added to the dynamic forested free flight section. Visitor response has been overwhelmingly positive.
Interpreters, animal care specialists, and volunteers engage Aquarium visitors in interactive butterfly programs during the summer. Butterfly releases, feedings, crafts, and other events are delivered throughout July and August. The Butterfly Encounter program lets visitors work closely with butterflies and staff behind-the-scenes. Participants are empowered to take immediate action to increase local butterfly habitat – and they each receive a butterfly garden seed mix to help them get started. All programming encourages participants to make personal connections with butterflies and inspires them to undertake conservation efforts at home.
