Calgary Zoo
The Butterfly Garden at the Calgary Zoo, Botanical Garden and Prehistoric Park displays free-flying exotic butterflies and visitors can witness their fascinating life cycle and dependence on specific plants. At various times of the year you may see eggs, caterpillars, pupae, and adult butterflies on host specific plants, such as lantana, citrus or passiflora, in this warm and humid habitat. The zoo hopes to expand the current butterfly program to a larger greenhouse where they will offer more educational opportunities about butterflies and other pollinators, as well as habitat restoration.
The Calgary Zoo is currently coordinating the Schoolyard Naturalization Program: Grounds for Change with the City of Calgary and area schools. The zoo also offers ongoing adult horticulture education programs such as a Master Gardener course, Woody Ornamentals, Plant Identification, and more.
