Major Accomplishments
Although a fairly young coalition, the BFCI is already making significant steps towards its mission of butterfly conservation in North America. BFCI's major accomplishments include the following:
- Creation of a course in Techniques for Butterfly Conservation and Management, offered 24-26 April 2006
- 2005 Annual Report: The Year of Education (236KB pdf)
- 2005 Significant progress on BFCI's education and outreach objectives (108KB pdf).
- 2005 Creating Successful Butterfly Conservation Education and Outreach Programs workshop (3.4MB pdf) at the Kansas City Zoo in Missouri
- 2004 Completion of large-scale butterfly habitat restoration (226KB pdf) at the Wilds in Southeastern Ohio and the 2005 publication of a Butterfly Festival Manual (1.5MB pdf), both with support from the George Gund Foundation
- 2004 Strategic Plan(116KB doc), providing a road map of goals and objectives for making a measurable impact on butterfly populations in North America
- 2004 Partnerships for California Butterfly Recovery meeting (127KB pdf) at the Santa Barbara Zoo in California
- 2003 Conservation Program Award from the Association of Zoological Horticulture
- 2003 Northwest Butterfly Conservation and Recovery Workshop (208KB pdf) at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Washington
- 2003 Futures Planning Meeting (240KB pdf) at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, MD that led to the development of BFCI's mission and infrastructure
- 2002 Karner Blue Butterfly Recovery Implementation Planning Workshop (67KB pdf) at the Toledo Zoo in Ohio
- Initial funding from Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grants
